Everyone Gets the Pulpit
On Friday, September 25, 2026, at The Shepherd in Detroit, a historic church turned art gallery, we share our voices in community.
Ruth Ellis opened her home as a safe haven long before it was safe to do so. No judgment. No conditions. Just an open door with the promise that whoever walked through it belonged.
Sanctuary was never a building – it was simply a person who made room. Every voice deserves the pulpit, and every story deserves to be told.
This year, VOICES calls our community together under that same promise. For one night, we invite you to light a candle for someone you carry, make a keepsake that expresses your authentic self, or step into the confessional to speak. In the words of Ruth herself, “Speak Up” – to our community, to a young person coming up, to your younger self. Say it proud and gather with us in joyful defiance.
VOICES lifts up the stories that keep our doors open. From housing to health care, food, and an affirming space, you are supporting LGBTQ+ young people who are bravely crafting and telling their own stories.
This is your call to assembly.
Attire: Formal Cocktail with a Flair. Your outfit is your canvas.
